ಜಗದಗಲ = ಅರಿಸಮಾಸ?

Sorry for posting this in english (Dont have Nudi/Baraha installed here!)

Some of the mistakes you are pointed out are very subtle, that I had not observed them till now. But, many newspaper have so many blatant mistakes (that too in headlines) that even a common man like me can notice.

I wonder how you have missed out the movie songs. One usage I can think of is "Aa thara, ee thara, yaa thara" (meaning yaava thara) This "yaa thara" is so pervasive, that it makes you cringe.

I think there are two reasons for this state of Kannada today:
1) People who know good Kannada dont speak Kannada (and they are not much in music, movies, tv or ads)
2) People who speak pathetic Kannada dont stop (they even make music, movies, ads - and that becomes acceptable form of language in the long run)

Kannada will not be extinct, but it would become a bad version called "Hochcha Hosa Kannada" in the long run!

Nanderdu Kaasu (My two cents!)

I personally believe that we need not forcefully use terms like "tantraamsha" for "software" - it would be better to use the word "software" in Kannada also (remember, we have accepted bus, car, van also!)

It is useless to be in this forceful translation spree - what do we call DVD, podcast, core duo processors? :) [These forcefully created words will just remain in the literary circles and wont be used by the general public]

Here goes my Kaasu number 3 & 4! :D

@ಆರಾಮ್,

@ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಳಲಿಚ್ಛಿಸದವರೇ,

@Bit Hawk,
Thanks for your nAlak kaasu :D

You know, I actually had a paragraph about movie songs. I don't get to hear a lot of them however, and I haven't heard the 'ತರಹಾವರಿ' songs. I decided to chuck the paragraph because of my very, very limited knowledge about movies and movie-songs.
I love the song'ಅನಿಸುತಿದೆ ಯಾಕೋ ಇಂದು', but the line 'ಪೂರ್ಣಚಂದಿರ ರಜಾ ಹಾಕಿದ' makes me want to cast a 'muffliato' spell... As you said, people who actually make movies and ads and stuff do not know Kannada at all, and vice versa.

About the other literal-translation-part, I remember Nissar Ahmed joking about calling a shaving brush 'मुख्मण्डन झाडू'. Yes, we cannot translate every new word into our languages. Best thing is to accept them into our language.

@nIlagrIva,

Pardon my "knotty" comment here!

I prefer English to Kannada most of the time. For me, writing in Kannada means much more effort and time. Yet, occasionally I do bother to make the effort and spend some time for no particular reason other than that Kannada and its literature are more familiar to me than any other language except English.

I wonder what could be the reasons for so many of us blogging in English, in spite of our fluency and affirmed love for Kannada. Even our target readers are Kannadigas mostly.

I wonder about this paradox?

I ought to have drafted this in Kannada, but as I said I felt like being a little...

@ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಳಲಿಚ್ಛಿಸದವರೆ,

So, is Kannada REALLY rotting?

Before jumping to say yes, read the following excerpt from the author's introduction to an interesting book

"QUITE LITERALLY - Problem Words And How To Use Them"

authored by Wynford Hicks and distributed in India by Cambridge University Press (2004).

After reading the excerpt, perhaps you might see that a dynamic language constantly keeps changing. Old Words acquire new meanings, new words keep evolving, old grammar rules might lose relevance, and conservatives might keep hollering that the language is going to the dogs.

If nothing else, you might realize that the complaint is not unique to Kannada but applies to all the languages in use.
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

"......

It’s noticeable that there is something of a divide among those who write about language between the conservatives and the radicals. The conservatives
are committed to standard English;

want to preserve the grammar they were taught at school and extend it
to everybody else;
fight to keep the traditional meaning of words and expressions;
think that dictionaries should be prescriptive rather than descriptive.

The radicals on the other hand,

want to undermine standard English, dismissing it as a mere dialect;
insist that the grammar of ‘uneducated’ people is just as good as taught grammar;
emphasise that words continually change their meaning – they
generally prefer the newer, more popular ones;
think that dictionaries should be descriptive rather than prescriptive.

In their extreme form both these positions are ridiculous and unhelpful. They make the problem of problem words worse.

Take these traditional precepts of old-fashioned teaching:

don’t start a sentence with a conjunction;
don’t end a sentence with a preposition;
don’t split an infinitive.

These instructions derive from the grammar of Latin, which was used as the model by the first English grammarians. None of them apply to modern English. Splitting infinitives and putting prepositions at the end of a sentence and conjunctions at the beginning are now clearly matters of style not grammar.
(And, by the way, to follow none by a plural instead of a singular verb – as I did in the previous paragraph – isn’t a grammatical mistake, either. The belief that it is a mistake is based on the mistaken idea that none always means not one.)

.....
At the same time writing doesn't have to be formal.... Now, thanks to email and text messaging, millions of words are written every day in a loose, unstructured conversational form. Clearly they undermine the rigid speech Vs.Writing division.

Wynford Hicks goes on to ask, "... So what's happening? Does the Queen no longer speak the Queen's English? (paragraph) It makes more sense to say that the Queen's English has changed with (almost)everybody else's and become looser." (Page 227)

The operative word is "looser." Languages across the globe are gradually losing their stiffness and becoming "looser," in keeping with the rapid developments happening in technology and increasing personal freedom.

The quality of the language used also indicates the cultural level of the person using it. Therefore, it is obvious that if we are to improve the quality of the language used, we need to facilitate the improvement in standards of living and life of our lesser brethren. Education holds the key.

Shall we conclude that our focus should be on the contents of our message and not the quality of the medium through which we communicate our messages?

DS: I was happy to see you bothering enough to comment on this.

@Aram,
A few weeks ago, there was an article on Thatskannada.com. The writer said that Kannada was shackled by the rules of grammar and that was not necessary. That is just like the radicals. However, I think there is one difference between Kannada and English (though that difference is vanishing fast, these days). English borrowed heavily from many languages including Latin, Greek, French and Sanskrit (the word bandicoot is supposed to have come from Telugu, pandikukka!). In contrast, Kannada borrows mainly from Sanskrit and Tamil, and a little from Urdu. Therefore, the grammar here is very close to Sanskrit Grammar, and therefore much better defined than English grammar. This is just what I think, and I am open to corrections.

@DS,

How was Kannada faring some 40-60 years ago?

Here is a glimpse excerpted from Dr. M. Shivaram(A great Kannada humorist, popularly known as Raa.Shi.)'s autobiographical book, "Kailasam and I" published in 1969. The late Raa.Shi.was a close associate of the legendary Kailasam (1885-1946)

The book, though out of print, is available with me, if you wish to read or acquire it.

Interestingly, though he had penned some 26 or so books in Kannada, Raa.Shi. chose to write this in English. He has also written another English book titled, Death and The Nachiketas.

(excerpts from pages 99 to 105)

"Kailasam was elected President for the annual meet of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, to be held at Madras. Apart from other things, the one important task that worried him was the Presidential Speech. The Speech would normally last for about an hour. It would in the usual course of events, cover a wide field in Kannada literature, its achievements and failures, and a plan or suggestions for future guidance. It had to be ready quite early so that it could be printed and distributed to the delegates at the time of the meet. Kailasam was staying with me then, and he passed on the worrying to me. Not the execution of the speech, that was entrusted to Sri Siddavanahalli Krishna Sharma. It is well-known that Sri Krishna Sharma has the gift of collecting the thoughts of others, analyse them, and put them into crisp, simple sentences, so that it would be easily understood by everybody. Kailasam had requested his old friend, Sharmaji to write up the script. But, he had to express his ideas. This is where I came in.

He would sit with me and think aloud, and ask me to clarify them, add to them, or suggest new ideas. Well! In one field I was equal to Kailasam, and that is in the colossal ignorance of Kannada literature, old, mid-period, or new. Like blind leading the blind, I was supposed to aid him in formulating his ideas. When he espied my total helplessness in this matter he would get angry and furious. He said, "I am a Tamilian, and have an excuse not to know Kannada literature. But you are born a Kannadiga, your mother-tongue is Kannada, and your Mother-in-law tongue is also Kannada, and you are a Kannadiga by profession. That is you cannot get on in your profession in Bangalore without knowing Kannada. You have no bloody excuse to be so ignorant." Even when I told him, that I needed no Kannada in my practice, he would not listen. A third of my patients talk to me in Tamil or Telugu and English. Another third in Urdu or Hindi or Hindusthani - to me all are the same -- and of course in English. The last third talk in some language I do not well understand, and they do not seem to understand my replies, and yet they are happy and so I am happy. Where is the need to know Kannada for anyone in Bangalore. "We are all Bharatha Matheya Makkalu and emotions are more important than language! And so on. A Kannadiga is taught English in his babyhood, daddy and mummy are the first words that he lisps. Later on he reads in Anglo-Vernacular Schools, that was the name given to the Primary and Middle Schools in my days. The Anglo came first and the inferior Vernacular came next, a poor second language. So we used to play in English and curse in choice Kannada. Thus we developed a brilliant expressive Kannada, but that could never enter into literature. After we married, the fashion was "Well my dear, my honey, my darling, etc." If you make love in English, and in intense moments revert to the language of sighs, and grunts, and Tarzan, where is the need to know Kannada? But what was the use of explaining all this to Kailasam, he would not listen, because it did not solve his immediate problem. Anyway, he did not cease to cross-examine me. The questions and answers would be somewhat on the following pattern.

"They talk a lot about the greatness and glory of geniuses like Ranna, Pampa, etc. Can you tell me something about them. Some popular and profound sayings which I may quote?"

"No, Sir, I have heard of their names like you have done. But I have not read any of those books, and have not listened to people who talk about them."

"Haalaagi Hoythu, at least do you know some other Poet or author. Do you remember anything they have said. You know what I mean, any of the lesser ones?"

"I am sorry, Sir, I have not heard of any other Poets at all. Apart from Ranna and Pampa and another Pampa or Ranna, I do not think there are other poets. Anyway I have not heard of them."

"Negedu Biddu Hoythu, any one of the Middle Age Poets. Do you remember?"

"I do not know about the Middle Age Poets or Authors. I do not think there were any. If there were I should have heard from them, or about them."

"Damn you and your Kannada. At least do you know any Modern Poets or Authors."

"Oh Yes, Sir, I know K.V. Puttappa, Masthi, Bendre, V.Si., Jahagirdar. Oh Yes, I know any number of them. Shall I make a list, Sir."

"All those people I know personally and intimately. I have heard them, talked to them and discussed with them about Art and Literature. What I wanted from you was any of their pithy and profound sayings that you remember. Anything that has made a lasting impression on you?"

"No, Sir. But if you want I will refer to those books and pick up some quotations."

"Gosh! What a mistake I made in thinking that you knew something about Kannada literature. I have been telling people so. What a crass ass you are!"

The above specimen conversation will give you an idea of my contribution to the Presidential Address. Kailasam thereafter stuck out a new path, and decided to talk from his heart. He had a lot to tell, and Krishna Sharma very easily got into his Mano-Dharma, and did an excellent job of getting up the printed Presidential Address. The actual speech he delivered was of course ex tempore and did not have much to do with what was written and printed.

......................

In Madras when I heard his Ex Tempore speech I found that he had improved quite a lot on the written speech. The one-sided discussions he had with me and others must have enabled him to enlarge the scope and manner of presentation of his basic ideas and thoughts. But being a Tamilian he would be in a great hurry to express his flowing and rushing ideas. A Telugu man would have sung out his words sonorously and at leisure. The Kannadiga is midway between these two. But Kailasam was talking in Kannada, in a Tamilian hurry. He expected his audience to be very quick on the up-take and follow him. Alas! This was impossible. We, Kannadigas, are capable of understanding everything, give us time, don't rush us up. Where is the need for all that hurry?

Slow and sure wins the race. I sometimes wonder if the tortoise in "The Tortoise And Hare" story was a Kannada tortoise and the Hare a Tamil one! And the story was originated by a slow and sure Kannadiga, being sure that his language would not be understood by the Tamilian. True, the old Kannada Hale-Gannada and old Tamil have a lot in common. But we are grown up now, and outgrown our roots, haven't we? Those that are born from the same root have a tendency later on when grown up, to branch out on their own paths. The same as in Nature and Evolution. The birds and reptiles started from the same root. When fully developed they started quarrelling. The early bird catches the worm, and the reptile loves to eat the eggs of the birds!

Bear with us, please, the hurrying ones. We Kannadigas will catch up with you."

ಬಹಳ ತಡವಾಗಿ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕ್ಷಮೆಯಿರಲಿ.

ಜೋಯಿಯವರೆ,
'ಸುವರ್ಣಕರ್ಣಾಟಕ' ಎಂಬ ಪದ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಂತೆ ಅರಿಸಮಾಸವಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಲ, ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ಪದವನ್ನು "ದಿನಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ" ಎಂಬ ಸಬೂಬು ಹೇಳಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸದಿದ್ದರೆ ಆ ಪದದ ಆಯುಷ್ಯ ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಮುಗಿದೇ ಹೋಯಿತು! ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಪಟ್ಟು ಹೊಸಹೊಸ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿದರೆ ಭಾಷೆ-ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಗಳು ಉಳಿದು ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತವೆ, ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲ!

@Aram,
Thanks for the informative and yet humorous anecdote. I have great respect for Kailasam. I had heard about Ra.Shi but had not read any of his works.
K.V.Iyer, the author of works like 'shAntalA' and 'rUpadarshi' was a body builder at first. When he showed Kailasam his abs, Kailasam remarked "ಹೋಟಲಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡ್ಲಿ ರುಬ್ಬೋ ಕೆಲಸ ಸಿಗತ್ತೆ!". K.V.Iyer then got drawn towards writing, and we have the superb works written by him.

Yes, we Kannadigas are tortoises. But we can be sure that we are safe from harm as long as we are steady! The question is whether we are steady.

Thanks for bringing up the name of the legendary, Mr. World, Kolar Venkatesha Iyer. His Rupadarshi, Shantala, Samudyata were and still are classics.

I had the good fortune of meeting him some 33 years ago when he was in his seventies. I am still grateful to him because he gave me a vision of my own end.

One of his body-building disciples was the late Mr. A. T.Kannan who later migrated to Kolkotta and Bengalized his name to A.T. Kanan and married a Bengali, Malobika. The two were my favorite Hindustani singers and she is still associated with the Sangeet Research Academy run by ITC in a gurukula system.

I wonder if you have read his collection of short stories, Samudyata. Sheer delight!

@Aram,
I have not read samudyatA, but I must buy it soon. I have read shAntalA and rUpadarshi multiple times, and each time the latter moves me to tears. And each time, I think what might have happened if he had stuck to bodybuilding.

I re-read your comment (the one written by Ra.shi) and each time, Kailasam never fails to make one smile!

Rupadarshi was based upon a small story "The Face Of Judas Iscariot" which KV Iyer read in an old Reader's Digest.

May I please present the rare book, "Kailasam and I" to you both?

Except for my aunt and me, there is no one else in our family who care about old Kannada books, and I believe the book will find a good home at yours.

@Aram,
Thanks for the present, and for thinking that your book will find a good home in ours. It is really nice of you.
